Aloha kåkou!

The time has finally arrived! We know, we know. It’s been nearly two years since we originally announced our collaboration with Aloha Got Soul, run by part-time skater-in-slacks-and-dress-shoes and full time hardcore digger Roger Bong. The mix, titled Hawaiian Salt, was originally inspired by triple-OG-digger DJ Muro’s mixed CD, Hawaiian Breaks, with each track hand selected by Roger. Clocking in at exactly 1:16:00 (get it?), the mix runs 27-tracks deep with selections that run the gamut from heavy funk to light jazz; all created by locals in Hawaiʻi. “Local Made, Local Played” is the motto. Our goal with this project is to 1: Educate those who may have never experienced or heard these amazing slabs of Hawaiian funk, soul, jazz and rare groove and 2: Let those who may remember these songs reminisce on the good ol’ days and lastly, but most importantly, let those overseas in the continental US and abroad know that even though we are extremely isolated from the US mainland, we were able to take the influence of the US genres and create something with our own twist spun to it.

The pack consists of a custom Aloha Got Soul t-shirt which features the project’s artwork on the front within the FITTED crest, printed on all black with tonal (black-on-black) Aloha Got Soul printed on the sleeve as well as the back. For every person that purchases the shirt, you’ll receive a free copy of the mix (which you can stream below. Please note: for online orders, it’s on a strict numbers basis).

Head’s Up: All hats are limited to 30 pieces!

Aloha kakou!

With tomorrow’s release, we’re saluting American Jazz Alto Saxophonist Jackie McLean as well acknowledging A Tribe Called Quest’s legendary We Got The Jazz. The graphic is inspired by Jackie McLean’s It’s Time album, while the verbage, is inspired by We Got The Jazz, think, We Got Aloha.

The tee features Jazz notes in teal with Aloha Served Daily in white; the bottom of the graphic features the names of all eight of our islands. Back side features the crown in teal. The cap is a San Francisco Giants MLB draped in black, silver SF logo and teal brim. The ideal summer outfit!

coltrane-blog

John William Coltrane. A man of illustrious proportions, a man who has redefined Jazz – and well, music as a whole. Born in Hamlet, North Carolina in 1926, a period when music was heavily syncopated and jazz and blues thrived like never before. Coltrane was also once stationed here in Hawaii nei in 1945 while serving in the Navy, even playing in the Naval band The Melody Masters. If you dig deep enough, you might be able to uncover a copy of privately recorded albums, recorded exclusively on acetate (5 to be exact). Coltrane also once played in MIles Davis’ band the “First Great Quintet,” at one point the band disbanded, but reunited with Davis in 1958. Other notable musicians Coltrane has worked with were Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley, Duke Ellington and Freddie Hubbard. In 1967, Coltrane passed away in a Long Island New York hospital due to liver cancer. Til this day, Coltrane’s family possesses many unreleased and unheard recordings. In 2007, Coltrane won a posthumous special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007 for his “masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz.”
