Rainbow Bridge is marketed as a Jimi Hendrix film, however Jimi apparently shows up only during the end of the film – the rest of the subject matter revolves around actress Pat Hartley and her enigmatic “spiritual awakening” via a visit to the ‘Rainbow Bridge’ planetary meditation cult on Maui. The actual concert, which was dubbed the Rainbow Bridge show was free to the public and held in a horse pasture on the interior of the slopes of Maui’s Haleakala, July 30, 1970. Two days later, Hendrix performed another show in Honolulu (Waikiki Shell), which was also the last leg of his Cry of Love tour with a refined Jimi Hendrix Experience ensemble, in turn, performing two entirely separate shows in Hawai’i. Former Mayor Frank Francis Fasi, purveyor of the Fasi shaka as well as what is regarded as America’s best public transportation system, passed away in his Makiki home last night, due to natural causes. Fasi, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut, eventually made the trip to Honolulu after enlisting in the Marines, shortly after the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor.

Fasi was regarded as a “maverick” during the early years of his political career, which lasted for a strong 46 years, serving as Mayor for 22 out of those 46. As Mayor of Honolulu, Fasi was responsible for numerous, ground-breaking achievements, including the opening of the Neal S. Blaisdell Center, the construction of the Satellite City Hall, and the establishment of The Bus, which has won numerous awards as America’s Best Transit System.

On top of the construction and opening of what have become some of Hawai’i's more famous landmarks, Fasi created our island’s Summer Fun recreational programs, and the annual Honolulu City Lights display. “Even rail transit was a centerpiece of his administration,” says current Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann. “He was truly one of the greatest mayors Honolulu has ever had, a visionary who spoke with action rather than words,” said Councilman Ikaika Anderson.

Fasi was an ambitious Democrat, a political hero to some, similar to whom he regarded as political heroes: Franklin D. Roosevelt, Adlai Stevenson and John F. Kennedy. A recent statement released by the Fasi ohana reads “The man affectionately known by many in Hawaii simply as ‘the Mayor’ truly loved this city of Honolulu and devoted much of his life in trying to improve it.”

This Saturday (Halloween) we have a crazy release: an all black tee with a graphic printed behind a silhouette of the Honolulu city skyline. We may not be a flourishing metropolis city like Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York City, but we do have a beautiful skyline (one of the greatest, if we may say so ourselves) – no overkill on the skyscrapers either. Add a beautiful sunset to fall below that skyline, and you have something astonishing and spectacular. Along with this tee is a new Aloha New Era covered in purple with a green tint to it, green brim and brown suede underbill with a white Aloha logo. The inside features a nice montage of an old Hawaiian graphic. Sophisticated and refined with a contrast of evilness (in a good way). Happy Halloween! Be safe and have fun; don’t be jacking your little brothers and sisters hard earned candy. You’re too old for that anyway, right?

Way back in the hanabata days, The Kim’s used to own a restaurant in Kaneohe called Bay Drive Inn. This was a spot we used to frequent before or after school, they were notoriously known for their “spam, cheese and onion” omelet. A few years later, they moved to California, seemingly gone forever, until years later they moved back to the islands and opened the above spot near the airport. For the most part, whenever we’re picking up a friend, family member or someone who’s visiting for the first time, this is the usual spot we’ll take them too. Big shouts to Jimmy Fingers.
