Aloha kākou!

Our Spring/Summer 2015 Delivery continues this Saturday with more items from the Weight of a Picul Collection. In these two seasons, we focus our attention to two of Hawaiʻi’s commodities that have proven to be incredibly important in Hawaiʻi’s socioeconomic growth. ʻIliahi, or Hawaiian sandalwood, dynamically shifted our economy with the introduction of the trade industry. Koa ushered in a new demand for quality materials in modern times, solidifying its place among the world’s finest woods. The name “Weight of a Picul” stems from the Asian unit of measure that was used when trading the sandalwood in the early 1800’s, defined as “the amount a man could carry on his shoulder” and equalled 133 1/3 pounds.

For this collection, we created two separate Real Tree Camouflage patterns based on the rare and endangered ʻIliahi Tree and the fine grain Koa Tree, both of which are endemic to Hawaiʻi. In each pattern we strive to highlight the trees for their distinct beauty and importance in Hawaiʻi’s history.

Koa Tree Camo Big Game Hunters 59FIFTY
Featuring breathable black spacer mesh on the side and back panels while the front two panels are polyester sublimated with our Koa Tree Camo pattern. The visor and top button are made of black neoprene. A blue and white Big Game Hunters patch is stitched onto the front panels, while tonal crown and New Era logos are embroidered on the sides and a black/white crest is seen on the back.

Le Fitted Tee – White
Released earlier this season, this design is inspired by Art Nouveau painter Alphonse Mucha. The Art Nouveau movement focused on design reform to bring higher quality and improved standards to design and other goods, and we took their emphasis on quality and translated that to the historical value of the koa and ‘iliahi commodities to Hawai‘i.

Aloha kakou!

We’ll be releasing this pack today at 11 AM. The pack consists of an all-white Kamehameha (All hats are limited to 30 pieces!) that represents the Hawaiian hawk, or ‘io [1. 1]. The ‘io is the only hawk native to Hawai’i and can only be found on the Big Island [2. 2]. Although this specific species of hawk are considered endangered in the continental U.S. and protected under law, the IUCN has classified this species as Near Threatened [3. 3]. The ‘io is also regarded as ʻaumakua, especially to Hawaiian royalty; more specifically the ali’i [4. 4].

Next up is our Aloha Served Daily tee that pays tribute to the legendary LOVE Park (JFK Plaza) located in Philadelphia, PA. It’s notorious for not just the beautiful LOVE sculpture [5. 5], but for skateboard culture. In 2002, Philadelphia’s obnoxious Mayor John Street enforced a ban for any type of skating at LOVE Park [6. 6]. Some big name skaters who made LOVE Park their own: Bam Margera, Josh Kalis, Kerry Getz and Stevie Williams [7. 7].

lettermen-crew-blog1

With Christmas rapidly approaching us around the corner, we’ve shifted our seasonal focus on just that: the winter season, while keeping the Hawaiiana culture intact. And while many upstarts and well established companies are clearly out there exploiting Hawaiian culture, traditions and customs just to make a quick buck, we’re sitting back and shaking our heads. Without knowing, at first glance, it would look as if we’re doing the same; but if one looks further, you would realize that we’re educating as opposed to exploitation. “The proof is in the poi.” But you already knew that.

Aloha.

Today is April 20th. Which equals to 4/20, numerically and horticulturally speaking. Many don’t really know this, but Hawaii was the first state to approve the medical marijuana bill. We’re not going to sit here and glorify the pros of legalizing this fine herb that many politicians and our government have been barring for more than 30 plus years, simply because there are no real facts to base any arguments on the subject. We will however, like to introduce you to our 4/20 shirt, with a side order of Aloha served. Printed on a black tee, the front design features the letters “ASD” (Aloha Served Daily) with muted tones of funny leaves in clear gel spread out through the lettering. The left sleeve features a red, gold and green kahili, while the back sees the crown (also in the same colors), again with clear gel inside of the crown. Stay lifted, spread Aloha, it’s the FITTED way! (For our 9th island residents [Las Vegas], these are now available in limited numbers at Laced)
