ESCAPE FROM URBANIZATION

Something about the Big Island gets in my blood every time I am there… it’s like I can feel the bottoms of my feet getting thicker and my skin getting tanned and salty just on the short flight over alone. Must be some sort of natural reflex getting me ready for the raw lava landscape, endless ocean and the vog filtered rays of the sun. We returned this time to once again celebrate Kristen’s birthday as she has come to very much appreciate the rural laziness that is South Kona. As we shared cocktails poolside looking back at our many years together she calmly reminded me that this would be the last year in which I would have a wife in her twenties… lucky me.

I think Mark Twain put it best when he described this part of Hawaii and I quote -”the sleepiest, quietest, Sundayest looking place you can imagine… Ye weary ones that are sick of the labor and care and bewildering turmoil of the great world, go to Kona! A week there ought to cure the saddest of you all.” Indeed.

DGK ALL DAY

Anyone who has been down with FITTED from the get go remembers when we brought the original Dirty Ghetto Kids down for a demo to celebrate our grand opening, don’t recall, you must not be crew. Anyways the newest members of the DGK squad were in town to do a little flossin’ at Aala Park last week. Although the park has a brand new coat of paint and looks fairly clean it definitely still holds that grimey charm that I can always count on. Bringing the demo full circle was our very own Matt Chaffin who has been putting in work within the skate industry as of the past few years, it was nice to see him signing autographs and handling all attention from the kids like a pro. Which is what he is bound to become if he keeps up all the hard work and by hard work I mean blunts, brews, nollie flips and gold chains.. it ain’t easy being a Dirty Ghetto Kid.

Aloha.

These three words: Blood, Sweat, Tears. They’re more than just words around these parts, with a muted undertone that many may not directly grasp. Not too beat a dead horse here, but we focus the effort of all three words into each & every release. But it goes deeper than that; even the heralded greats who paved the way for us spilled blood, sweat and tears to build what we all have and embrace today. Blood was shed in battle / wars, sweat dripped from the pores of those who slaved in the rice fields & taro patches, and tears of happiness or sorrow trickled down the cheeks of our forefathers. Its the culmination of eminence in Hawaii history.
