ETHEL AZAMA: A FORGOTTEN JAZZ VOCALIST FROM HAWAI’I

Friday, January 28th, 2011 by

I came across Ethel Azama while doing my regular deep-in-the-crates digging and am glad that I stumbled upon a jewel of a forgotten and barely-known-to-the-new-generation artist. Ethel Azama was born and raised in Honolulu; a Nisei of Okinawan ancestry. Between the mid-1950s on through the 80s, Ethel held residencies at various jazz nightclubs. There is, unfortunately, little known on Ms. Azama, aside from a few Wikipedia entries, and chances of finding her albums (besides downloading them) are pretty much slim to none. If you wish to dig for some of her music, you can start with her debut Exotic Dreams which was released on Liberty Records in 1957. Hopefully someone with more information on Ethel will come out of the wood works. Sadly, Ethel Azama passed away in 1984 (at the young age of 49).

SCIENCE: LAB-GROWN HUMAN ORGANS

Thursday, January 27th, 2011 by

Gone are the days of organ-transplant operations and waiting a few days to see if the recipient’s body and cells accept or reject said organs. With recent breakthroughs, scientists and biologists have found a way to stimulate the growth of cells on any body organ. Scientists can construct a heart, liver, kidney, etc. from scratch, inject cells onto whichever organ is needed and with the assistance of an incubator, can motivate cell growth over that organ. With this new breakthrough, there is no way the body can reject the organ as the cells and organs belong to the recipient. Scientists have even found a way to utilize an ink-jet printer to PRINT out body organs. I kid you not. They inject human cells into the ink cartridge and hit print. This only further shows and proves how intelligent atoms and proteins really are. Unfortunately, we’ll more than likely end up seeing savages who will now drink their kidneys away knowing that a replacement is just days away.
