This Saturday (Halloween) we have a crazy release: an all black tee with a graphic printed behind a silhouette of the Honolulu city skyline. We may not be a flourishing metropolis city like Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York City, but we do have a beautiful skyline (one of the greatest, if we may say so ourselves) – no overkill on the skyscrapers either. Add a beautiful sunset to fall below that skyline, and you have something astonishing and spectacular. Along with this tee is a new Aloha New Era covered in purple with a green tint to it, green brim and brown suede underbill with a white Aloha logo. The inside features a nice montage of an old Hawaiian graphic. Sophisticated and refined with a contrast of evilness (in a good way). Happy Halloween! Be safe and have fun; don’t be jacking your little brothers and sisters hard earned candy. You’re too old for that anyway, right?

There are a few things that tie together our island of Hawai’i with our mainland counterparts in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Besides the close ties many of us may have, including family and friends, it really extends past all that. Besides the different climates, seasons, surf and beaches, we do share the same similarities. Food, culture, ethnic backgrounds that make up our cities – they’re a shared common bond. The graphic on this tee is derived from Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures album with Pacific Vibrations printed on the bottom and an Los Angeles, San Francisco and Hawaii hits. Along with this pack are a custom San Francisco (all red) with a white brim and navy blue SF logo and an LA Dodgers dipped in Dodgers blue with a white LA logo.

HONEY GLAZED HAMS OF HAWAII

Located on South King Street, just a few blocks up from the Moilili post office is a small, locally owned and operated business called Honey Glazed Hams Of Hawaii which many locals and critics alike agree make what is considered the best holiday hams on the island, bar-none. Every holiday, during the beginning of November to the beginning of January, Honey Glazed Hams prepare & sell their infamous holiday hams which is already spirally around the bone, making for an easy and ready-to-go Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. During the peak holiday season, you can order two weeks in advance, however, ordering in advance or not, it is normal to find yourself in a line that stretches out the door. Pretty insane! During the off-peak seasons, many don’t know that their doors are still open and serving an onolicious prime honey glazed ham sandwich and a mean Portuguese bean soup. I can attest to this, having gone here for more than three years.

Honey Glazed Hams Of Hawaii is located at:
2758 S. King St.
Honolulu, HI 96826
(808) 943-0040
Hours: Tues – Sat: 10am – 5pm

This turn-of-phrase (______ is the new black) is heard quite often in pop culture and used as a metaphor “to indicate the sudden popularity or versatility of an idea at the expense of the popularity of a second idea.” With Hawaii creeping it’s way on to the map (that we’re already apart of, mind you) and bringing more awareness to our extraordinary culture and history, it seems many other companies and businesses are taking notice, and following suit; both local and domestic. It’s about time that we start reeling in the props that we deserve as not just the 50th state, but as notable islands with such an exemplary historical storyline standing behind it. You see the infinite amount of shakas being thrown across the world, the many ego-driven artists making pit stops on our island to record music, MTV using the trilocks in their transitions during commercials, counterfeit suntans like you planted your ass down at Ke Iki’s for a week straight or how widespread the word “brah” gets tossed around. Let’s keep it real, Hawaiian is the new black.

This unique “pop-up” restaurant is perched atop the roof of Palaid De Tokyo, expected to replace Hotel Everland. The word “nomiya” means “drinking house” in Japanese; tiny bars (which also may serve sushi) that are found around Japan. The restaurant is about the size of a shipping container which can seat a party of a dozen with a magnificent panoramic view of the capital of France. Read more over at Travel With Frank Gehry.
